Garage door won’t open? Safe checks, likely causes and when to call

Did you hear a loud bang before the door stopped working? If yes, leave the door alone and call (254) 232-8788. If no, your garage door won’t open for a simpler reason more often than you might expect, and the six checks below take about five minutes. None of them involve touching springs or cables, or lifting the door.

We are a call and dispatch service. You call us, and we send a technician from our partner shop. If a car is stuck inside, read what to do right now first.

Why won’t my garage door open?

The usual causes are no power, a dead remote, a locked or disconnected door, a broken spring, or an opener fault. Match what you see to the table.

What safe checks can I do first?

Do these in order and stop at any sign of a broken spring.

  1. Check that the opener is plugged in and the breaker is on.
  2. Press the wall button, then the remote. If only the wall button works, the remote is the problem.
  3. Replace the remote battery.
  4. Look at the door’s lock. A lock that is engaged can stop the door, and Chamberlain says the owner can release it.
  5. Look at the red release cord. If the cord was pulled, the door may be disconnected from the opener. If the door is not fully down, do not touch it. The opener manual shows how to reconnect it when the door is down.
  6. Look for a gap in the spring above the door, loose cables or a crooked door. If you see any of these, stop and call.

Before anyone works on the opener itself, cut the power. Chamberlain’s support site warns about serious injury if you do not.

Why does my garage door opener hum but the door won’t move?

Because the motor is trying and something is not letting the door go. Chamberlain lists a trolley stuck on its stop bolt, a locked door, a broken spring and, on screw-drive openers, a worn rack. Garaga adds a failed logic board. A broken spring is the one to rule out first. Do not pull on the door to test it. For opener faults, see our opener repair page.

Why is my garage door stuck halfway?

Often something is binding, or the door is out of balance. DASMA says a door that feels awkward by hand is out of balance. Do not raise the opener’s force setting to push the door through. If it needs more force, something is wrong in the track, the springs or the cables. Stop and call.

What is your garage door doing?

Takes about 60 seconds. Nothing you pick is saved or sent.

Can I open my garage door by hand?

Only if it feels light and moves easily. If it feels heavy, stop. A door with a broken spring can fall fast, and the opener cannot hold it. We will not tell you to lift a door that is not balanced. If a car is stuck inside, see the emergency page.

Can a door that won’t open wait until morning?

Sometimes. A closed, locked garage with no car inside can wait for daylight if the door shows no sign of a broken spring. A door stuck open, a trapped car or a door that could drop cannot wait. The table on the emergency page sorts these cases.

What should I tell you on the phone?

Say what you heard and saw, in this order: any bang, whether the opener has lights or sound, whether it hums, whether the door is up, down or halfway, and whether the lock or release cord has been touched. That helps us give a closer price range before we send anyone.

When should I stop and call?

Call at once if any of these is true:

  • You heard a bang, and now the door is heavy.
  • You can see a gap in the spring or loose cables.
  • The door is crooked, off its track or jammed.
  • The motor grinds, or the door hums and will not move after you have checked the lock.
  • A car is trapped or the door is stuck open.
