Garage door stops halfway in Killeen, TX: causes and what to do

A garage door that stops halfway usually has a blocked path, a limit setting, a binding track or a spring that no longer carries the door. Stop pressing the button and call (254) 232-8788. We arrange repair when a garage door stops in the middle, with a price range on the phone before anyone is sent.

We are a call and dispatch service. You call us, and we send a technician from our partner shop. Springs and limit settings are where owners get hurt, so this page gives checks from the floor only.

Why does my garage door stop halfway?

It stops because something tells the opener to stop, or because the door is too heavy for it to lift. Chamberlain names four causes for a door that will not open all the way: an obstruction or binding, travel limits set wrong, too little up force, and poor door balance. (Source: Chamberlain Group support, checked 3 Oct 2026) Use the table to match what you see.

What should I check first when my garage door stops in the middle?

Check these four things from the floor, in this order:

  • Is anything in the door’s path, such as a box, a hose or a bike?
  • Are the two sensor lights near the floor steady? If one is off or blinking, wipe the lens and clear the path.
  • Is the door’s manual lock open, if your door has one?
  • Does the wall button act the same as the remote?

If all four look fine, stop pressing buttons and call. Do not climb a ladder or touch the springs.

What is your garage door doing?

Takes about 60 seconds. Nothing you pick is saved or sent.

Why does my garage door go up a few inches and then stop or fall back?

A door that rises a few inches and slides back down is usually out of balance. The spring is not carrying its weight, so the opener cannot hold it. Do not prop it with a board or clamp the track. A door that is crooked on top of that may be off its track, and our off-track guide covers that. Look at the signs of a broken spring from a distance.

Can a broken spring make the door stop halfway?

Yes. Many doors cannot lift past the first few inches after a spring breaks, and an opener that strains is a warning sign. DASMA says springs, cables and bottom brackets should be handled only by trained professionals. (Source: DASMA safety tips, modified 5 Jan 2024) See our spring repair page for the signs and what to ask.

Can the travel limits or force setting make a door stop partway?

Yes, but they are not owner settings to change. Chamberlain warns that wrong travel limits can break the safety reversal and could seriously injure or kill someone. (Source: Chamberlain Group support, checked 3 Oct 2026) The same page says to test door balance first. Do not turn up the force to push a stuck door. Ask a technician to check the limits and to test the auto-reverse afterward.

Can a door that works on the second try be a warning sign?

It can be. A door that hesitates on the first press and then runs may have a limit problem, a binding spot or a bottom seal that sticks. We have not found a source that measures how often each one causes it. Note when it happens, such as after cold nights or rain, and tell us on the call.

Door stuck or unsafe? Our line is open 24/7. Call before you try anything.

Can I fix a door that stops halfway myself?

Only the floor checks above. Do not do any of these:

  • Hold the button down to force the door.
  • Raise the force setting or change the limits.
  • Prop or clamp a door that slides down.
  • Lift the door by hand if it feels heavy.

What does a technician check on a door like this?

Ask for these steps, and ask for each finding in plain words:

  1. Make the door safe before touching anything.
  2. Check the springs, cables and drums.
  3. Check the tracks, rollers and brackets for binding.
  4. Check the sensors and the opener’s limits and force.
  5. Test the balance and the auto-reverse before leaving.
