Garage door opener hums but door won’t move in Killeen, TX: causes and what to do
If the garage door opener hums but the door won’t move, stop pressing the button. A broken spring is a common cause, and a locked door, a stuck trolley or a worn part can also do it. Call (254) 232-8788. We arrange help when a garage door opener hums, with a price range on the phone before anyone is sent.
We are a call and dispatch service. You call us, and we send a technician from our partner shop. Springs and opener parts carry risk, so this page gives checks from the floor only.
Why does my garage door opener hum but not open the door?
The motor is running, but something keeps the door from moving. Chamberlain lists a broken spring, an active door lock, a door disconnected from the opener, a trolley stuck on the stop bolt and, on screw drives, a stripped rack. (Source: Chamberlain Group support, noise guide, checked 3 Oct 2026)
| Clue | Likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Loud bang before the hum | Broken spring | Keep clear. Call |
| Hum, and the door’s manual lock is on | Lock engaged | Unlock it, try once, then call if nothing changes |
| Motor runs, door will not follow | Door disconnected from the opener | Call |
| Hum at the end of travel | Trolley against the stop bolt | Call |
| Long grinding hum on a screw drive | Stripped rack | Call |
What should I do first when the opener hums and the door won’t move?
Do these three things:
- Stop pressing the button. More tries do not help.
- Look at the door’s manual lock, if it has one. It must be open.
- Look at the red release cord from the floor. Do not pull it if the door feels heavy.
If nothing changes, call. Do not climb a ladder or touch the springs.

Can a broken spring make the opener hum?
Yes, and it is the most common cause we hear about. The opener can run, but it cannot lift a door that has lost its spring support. Chamberlain says a broken spring needs a trained technician. DASMA says the same about springs, cables and bottom brackets. (Source: DASMA safety tips, modified 5 Jan 2024) See our spring signs guide and spring repair page.
Can the door lock stop a door from moving?
Yes. If the manual lock is on, the opener hums and the door stays put. Chamberlain lists this as a cause. Open the lock and press the button once. If the door still does not move, stop and call.
What is a trolley stuck on the stop bolt?
The trolley is the part that pulls the door along the rail. If it sits against the stop bolt, the motor hums and the door does not move. Chamberlain says the fix involves the release handle and a travel adjustment, then a safety reversal test. (Source: Chamberlain Group support, trolley article, 2020 update) Wrong limits can defeat the safety reversal, so leave this to a technician.
What does a stripped gear or rack mean?
It means a worn part inside the opener no longer grips. Chamberlain says screw drives can have a stripped rack, which is the black piece inside the rail. Chain and belt drives have other wear points. A technician can tell you if a part will do or if the opener is worn out.
What is safe to do and what should I leave alone?
| You can do | Leave to a technician |
|---|---|
| Stop pressing the button | Touching springs or cables |
| Open the manual lock | Pulling the release cord on a heavy door |
| Look at the cord and rail from the floor | Opener repairs or travel limits |
| Take a photo from a safe distance | Climbing a ladder to the motor |
Chamberlain tells owners to disconnect all power before opener service. That is a technician’s job here.
Do I need a new opener if it hums?
Not always. A hum often points to the door, not the motor. Replace the opener when it is old, failing more than once or a worn part costs close to a new unit. Our opener repair page explains how to decide.
How much does it cost when the opener hums but the door won’t move?
The cost follows the cause. These are published national figures, not Killeen quotes.
| Cause | Range | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Spring replacement | $150 to $350 (average $250) | Angi, 10 Jul 2026, national |
| Opener installation | $218 to $540 (average $379) | Angi, 3 Aug 2026, national |
On our line you hear a price range first and a firm price on site before work starts. A part such as a rack costs less than a new opener, but we have no Killeen price for it. The repair cost guide shows how to read a quote.
