Garage door off track in Killeen, TX: what to do first
A garage door off track is not safe to run, push or force back. Stop using it, keep people and cars clear, and call (254) 232-8788. When a garage door came off track, we arrange the repair with a price range on the phone before anyone is sent.
We are a call and dispatch service. You call us, and we send a technician from our partner shop. A door off its track can still be under spring and cable tension, so this page gives no fix-it-yourself steps.
Is it an emergency when a door is off its track?
Yes, if a car is trapped, the door is stuck open or the door looks ready to drop. Overhead Door tells owners to contact a professional when the door goes off track. (Source: Overhead Door, maintenance guide, undated) If the door is stuck, use our emergency steps and call at once. If the door is closed, crooked and not in your way, it can wait for a technician, but do not use it.
What do I do right now if my garage door came off track?
Do these four things, in this order:
- Do not press the wall button or the remote. The opener can pull a crooked door further out of place.
- Keep people, pets and cars away from the door.
- Do not touch the springs, cables or the brackets at the bottom corners.
- Take a photo from a safe distance and call us.
Tell us which side is low, whether you heard a bang and whether a car is inside. That decides how fast we move.
Can I pull the release cord and push the door back onto the track?
Not before you have talked to us. A door off its track can hang from one cable, and a broken spring can leave it too heavy to hold. DASMA says springs, cables and bottom brackets are dangerous and should be repaired only by trained professionals. (Source: DASMA, Garage Door Systems, Safety Tips, modified 5 Jan 2024) Do not hit the track with a hammer and do not use a prop or a clamp.
Is it safe to leave a door off track overnight?
If it is closed and the car is out, usually yes. Do not use it, and lock the door between the garage and the house. If the door is stuck open, take small valuables inside, lock the house door and call. A technician can close and secure it.

What does it mean when a door is off its track?
It means the rollers have left the metal track on one or both sides. The door then sits crooked, jams or hangs by a cable. Angi, a home services site, lists track work and bracket work as repairs, and it notes that roller work means removing the door from the track. (Source: Angi, garage door repair costs, updated 3 Aug 2026) That is why a door off its track is a technician’s job.
Why does a garage door come off track?
Most of the time, something hit it or something wore out. These are the usual causes:
- An impact from a car, a bike or a moving box.
- A bent track or loose track brackets. Overhead Door says to check tracks for bending, rust and loose fasteners. (Source: Overhead Door, maintenance guide, undated)
- Worn or broken rollers. The same guide lists chips, cracks and bad bearings as signs. Our roller repair page covers them.
- A loose or slipped cable.
- A broken spring that leaves the door out of balance.
Can a broken spring or cable make the door come off track?
Yes, and that is the danger. If a spring or cable has failed, the door may be both off track and very heavy. Look at the signs of a broken spring from a distance. Our cable repair page explains the cable side.
Can hail or wind knock a door off its track?
Hail can dent panels and bend tracks or brackets. It rarely breaks a spring. After a storm, look at the door from the floor. Photograph any damage before anyone touches it, and do not run a door that looks crooked. Check your policy before you pay for a repair.
Why does my garage door slide down or hang crooked?
A door that rises a few inches and slides back down is usually out of balance. A door with one side lower than the other usually has a cable or track problem. Both can come with a broken spring. Do not prop the door with a board, and do not clamp the track to hold it up. A door that slides down is telling you the springs are not carrying its weight. Stop using it and call.
Can I check whether my garage door is balanced?
Not on a door that is off track, crooked or has a broken spring. A hand test on those doors can drop the door on you. On a door that runs normally, DASMA says a door that feels awkward by hand is out of balance, and that an out-of-balance door makes the opener work harder. (Source: DASMA, modified 5 Jan 2024) Ask the technician to test the balance after any track repair. Do not adjust the springs yourself.
Can I fix a garage door that is off track myself?
No. A crooked door can still be loaded by the spring and cables, and pushing it can make the problem bigger. Overhead Door says owners should handle cleaning, inspection and light lubrication, and should call a professional for spring work, bottom bracket removal and a door that is off track. (Source: Overhead Door, maintenance guide, undated)
What you can safely do is look, photograph and call. Do not climb a ladder to look closer.
What happens when a technician repairs a door that is off track?
Ask for these steps, and ask the technician to explain each one:
- Make the door safe before touching anything.
- Check the springs, cables and drums for damage.
- Inspect the track, the brackets and the rollers.
- Straighten the track or replace what is bent or broken.
- Test the balance, the opener and the auto-reverse before leaving.
You should get a price before work starts and a written invoice after it. The technician should tell you what failed and why.
How much does it cost to fix a garage door off track?
We do not have a Killeen price list, so these are published national figures, not Killeen quotes.
| Repair | Range | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Track repair or realignment | $40 to $120 for tracks | Angi, 3 Aug 2026, national |
| Track brackets | $5 to $40; up to $160 with labor | Angi, 3 Aug 2026, national |
| Roller replacement | $110 to $230 | Angi, 3 Aug 2026, national |
A damaged cable, spring or panel adds to the bill, and so does a late-night call. Angi’s list shows parts, and the technician’s time and the safety work come on top. The repair cost guide shows how to read a quote. On our line you hear a price range first and a firm price on site before work starts.
